Navigating the stigma of divorce in dating.

For many singles, hearing that someone is divorced can feel like a red flag.

Emotional baggage. Trust issues. Ex-spouses. Children. Family drama. The assumption is often that dating a divorcee comes with too much “history.”

But what if that history is exactly what makes them a better partner the second time around?

According to Stats SA’s 2023 divorce data, most divorces in South Africa happen in first marriages. More than 85% of divorces were from first marriages, while only 8.8% of divorced husbands and 7.3% of divorced wives were ending a second marriage.

So maybe the second try is not the risky one. Maybe it is the wiser one.

To get a real perspective, we recently chatted to a friend who is actively dating at the moment, about whether she would date a divorcee. Her answer? She would not rule it out, but she would approach it with caution.

And that feels like the honest middle ground.

Because being divorced does not automatically make someone a red flag. It may mean they have grown, matured and learned how relationships really work. But it could also mean there are unresolved issues they have not dealt with yet.

When we asked what would concern her most, she said emotional baggage and family dynamics.

Not the divorce itself.

The real worry is whether the person has healed. Can they speak about their ex without anger? Have they taken accountability? Are they emotionally ready to recommit? If children are involved, are there healthy co-parenting boundaries?

These are the things that matter.

She also believes people can understand relationships better the second time around, but only if they have taken time to reflect. After a marriage ends, people often learn what they want, what they cannot tolerate, and what makes them feel loved.

That kind of clarity can be a green flag.

Of course, the reason for the divorce matters too. Two people growing apart is very different from cheating, abuse or repeated disrespect. Knowing what happened helps you understand whether the person has learned from the past or is likely to repeat it.

So, when is a divorcee ready for love?

For her, the biggest sign is emotional maturity. Someone who can speak honestly about their divorce without bitterness. Someone with healthy boundaries. Someone consistent, honest and not just dating because they are lonely.

Maybe we need to stop asking, “Would you date someone divorced?”

Maybe the better question is: “What did the divorce teach them?”

Because someone who has loved, lost, healed and learned may not be the risky choice.

They might be the most intentional one.
